Floors are our products and wood is our medium.
Native Texas mesquite
Texas Mesquite is North America's most remarkable hardwood species. The durability represented by this truly unique hardwood is unsurpassed. In most area of Texas, the mesquite tree is considered little more than intrusive brush and a nuisance. Countless man hours and thousands of dollars have been dedicated to the control and eradication of mesquite through Texas.
Against all odds, Texas Mesquite thrives in some of the harshest environments imaginable, and has proven to be one of the most desirable hardwood species. Hardwood Design Co has been a pioneer in the development of Texas mesquite's journey from what most would consider "unusable" to one of the most exclusive and spectacular hardwoods available.
Texas Mesquite is versatile and can appeal to many timeless design styles. From a simple natural look to rustic lodge style, our Mesquite will capture the pure essence that is truly Texas.
Southern Pecan
Southern Pecan is a true American original and is native to only the United States. The Pecan tree is found primarily in river bottoms and flood plains from the Mississippi Valley to Texas. Being a member of the Walnut family, the Pecan tree has been prized throughout history for its timber and its life giving crop. The Pecan tree is thought to be the only tree cultivated in orchards by pre-Colonial Native Americans.
The Southern Pecan's wood characteristics are unique and versatile. The interestingly patterned Heartwood is pale reddish brown in color with occasional dark, pecky streaks. The Sapwood is white to cream in color with fine brown lines. The grain is occasionally wavy and irregular, adding to the mystic character that makes true Southern Pecan so desirable.
Although Pecan is very heavy and strong, it remains elastic and quite shock-resistant. Our floors are manufactured from only true Southern Pecan.
Reclaimed Oak & Pine
The story of reclaimed woods is rich with history. In the 1700's, vast forests ranged throughout America. The trees grew tall, straight and strong, making them perfect for the building and development that came with the Industrial Revolution. These fine timbers were used for building ships as well as building our first factories. Most of this extremely old forest was harvested in the 1800's and early 1900's and sadly in a non-sustainable way. Only a fraction of these old forests remain and never again will people wait hundreds of years for new trees to mature to this quality.
Reclaimed woods, mainly due to long exposure to the elements, are much richer in color and more durable than new growth lumber harvested today. There is no way to duplicate the hundreds of years of history this unique resource offers in patina, grain and character.
At Hardwood Design Co., we reclaim the priceless timber and lumber from old structures and find new uses. Once reclaimed, each nail is then pulled one nail at a time and each board processed for whatever purposed desired. The resulting character of each board is certainly one that will not be duplicated.
